 오늘 소개할 곡은 1958년에 데뷔했던 영국 가수 클리프 리차드가 1970년에 발매한 앨범 'Tracks 'N Groove'에 수록된 Early in the morning입니다.

뭐 제 세대에서도 익숙한 가수는 아니지만 비틀즈 이전 영국 음악을 대표하는 가수들 중에 한 명으로 많은 인기를 끌었던 가수입니다.

 제가 이 노래를 접하게 되었던 계기는 임창정, 고소영이 주연으로 나온 영화 '해가 서쪽에서 뜬다면'(1998)입니다. 영화의 클라이막스 장면(아마 임창정이 야구심판이고 고소영이 야구 시구를 하는 상황이었던 걸로 기억하는데...확실하진 않네요)에 삽입곡으로 쓰였습니다. 영화는 그냥 평범한 멜로영화였던 걸로 기억하고 있습니다. 크게 인상에 남는 영화는 아니었는데 삽입곡으로 쓰였던 이 노래가 맘에 들어서 영화도 기억하고 있는 경우입니다.

 뭐 좀 맥락없긴 하지만...우리가 기억에 담아두고 있는 일의 상당부분은 그렇게 뜬금없고 맥락없는 일들이 아니지 않나 생각합니다. 그러다가 불현듯 떠올라서 피식 웃게 만드는 점도 좋고.
